Child Care

Child CareChildcare is the act of caring for and supervising minor children. (In Australia, daycare is referred to as "childcare".)

It is traditional in western society for children to be looked after by one or both of their parents, but the need for two-job households means that childcare is often delegated, at least part of the time, to childminders.

Most Western countries also have compulsory education, and during the time the children are at school, the school will act in loco parentis.

Where parents are missing or dead, or unable or unfit to care for children, state agencies such as social services may take on the childcare role.

Wealthy people who prefer the services of professionals may delegate the parental role almost completely to nannies.

However, for many the use of paid childcare is a matter of choice with arguments raging on both sides about whether children suffer or not. There is no doubt that for all children the first few years are vitally important to form a basis for good education, morality, self-discipline and social integration. Consistency of approach, skills and qualifications of careers and community ownership have been shown in many studies to improve the chances of a child reaching his or her full potential - for example a recent study in Australia showed that 20% of careers working in large commercial child care chains would not put their own children in the centre they work in, whereas only 2% of careers in community owned not-for-profit centres had similar concerns.

One of the challenges for parents who choose to use childcare is finding qualified providers. Some jurisdictions require licensing or certification. Parents may also turn to independent rating services, or rely on recommendationa dn referrals.

Cloth versus Disposable Diapers

Interestingly, the debate of using cloth versus disposable diapers continues to be a hot topic today.  Although many parents long preferred cloth because of quality, keep in mind that the diapers you find on the market today are quite advanced.  Even so, the cloth diaper does have advantages too.  As you will discover in this article, not only does a disposable diaper work, but also cloth.  Therefore, the decision as to what you will use for your baby is a personal choice based on a number of factors.

Skin and Health

Obviously, the most important consideration is what keeps your baby dry and rash free.  One of the advantages of cloth is that because this type of diaper does not have the same level of absorbency as you would get with disposable diapers, the baby is usually changed quicker after having soiled the diaper.  Unfortunately, even with the super absorbent diapers, it becomes a bad habit of leaving the baby in it too long after wetting, which can lead to diaper rash.

When your baby is exposed to a wet diaper over an extended period, a number of things happen to include no air circulation, ammonia developing from the urine and bacteria, and microbes can begin to grow.  All of these things easily lead to an irritation of diaper rash, which when severe, can cause blisters and bleeding, open sores.  Therefore, regardless of the type of diaper you choose, check your baby often, keeping him or her dry.

With cloth diapers, not only is frequent changing required to prevent diaper rash, but also proper sterilization.  Typically, you would have a pail that contains water and a chemical specifically designed for cloth diapers in which to soak them.  Then, the cloth diaper should be washed in hot water with bleach, but also a mild detergent.  Just remember, frequent changing is the key to eliminating diaper rash.

Cost

Another huge consideration for buying diapers has to do with cost.  Generally, quality disposable diapers will range in price from $50 to $80 a month whereas cloth diapers cost about $25 to $60.  However, if you choose to have a diaper service, which brings you, new cloth diapers each week, then the cost would be in the same range as using disposable diapers.

Of course, many variables come into play regarding price.  For instance, the top name brand disposable diapers are going to be much more expensive than other brands.  Cloth diapers may last longer than expected, especially if you purchase quality initially, which means the cost of replacement is $0 to $10 a month.  Even the cost for a diaper service will vary, depending on the quality of diaper you choose and the number of diaper services in your area, with the more competition the lower the price.

Environment

With more and more people being environmentally friendly, another debate has risen concerning diapers.  For instance, concern has been addressed regarding disposable diapers, with them not being good for landfills whereas other people have voiced concerns over the excess water to wash cloth.  When you consider that every year, approximately two billion tons of urine, feces, plastic, and paper go into a landfill, it is easy to understand this valid concern.  Then, for disposable diapers to be made, 200,000 trees and 80,000 pounds of plastic are used each year.

Convenience

Finally, the one factor that most parents think of most after health and skin safety is convenience.  With so many two-income families, finding time for anything is difficult.  Just remember that while you might think disposable diapers are more convenient over cloth, this is not the case.  If you were to pin a cloth diaper onto one baby and a Velcro-fastening disposable diaper on another baby at the same time, both diapers would be done at the same time.

However, there are definitely situations in which disposable diapers are the more convenient choice.  For instance, while traveling, you simply go to the airport bathroom, change the baby, and toss the diaper in the trash.  Obviously, with a cloth diaper, you would have to carry a plastic bag with you, taking the dirty diaper along for the trip until you reached a place where it could be washed.  Because of this, we often see parents choosing cloth diapers while at home but disposable diapers for situations of convenience.  However, the ultimate choice is a personal one and yours to make.

It boils down to being a personal preference.  Although the pros and cons are important to understand and analyze, most parents will make the decision on what works best for their lifestyle.

Fun Babysitting Tips

Fun Babysitting TipsWhen you are babysitting, you may wonder to yourself, what can I do with these kids? For some of us, it is quite easy and fun to come up with a few games to play. But for others, you need to head to the location ready with some ideas in tow. The best thing for you to do is to turn off the television and get down on the floor and play with the kids you are watching. This is the ideal way for you to get to know them and entertain them.

To help you, here are some fun things that you can do with children under the age of six.

For those children that are big enough to walk and talk, you'll want to play a game with them or do some pretend play. Children love to make up a story and play it out. You can pretend to be super heroes or pretend to be at a tea party. Ask them to come up with the pretend game.

For babies or very small toddlers, it is up to you to provide the entertainment. They will enjoy when you sing to them or read to them. You may want to bring over your favorite books when you were a child. Or, you may want to play games like peek a boo and other silly songs.
For a game to play, consider things that will be in the same room as you are in, so that no one is getting hurt or lost in the process. You can play things like Mother May I and Red Light Green Light.

For older children, you may want to work on a puzzle or do some coloring. Often, these kids are at a stage when they are looking for someone to just have a chat with while they do something. For example, if the two of you sit at the kitchen table with a box of crayons and a new coloring book, they are likely to ask you lots of silly questions and have a few stories to tell too. They like to be the big kid too.

It is always good to read to a child. You can find a wide range of books to read right before bed time that will help them to relax and unwind after all the playing that you two have been doing. Its important to make sure to follow the same routine for bed as their parents do, so that they don't feel out of place. And, so that you can get some rest.

Determine what your child enjoys and then provide a little entertainment for him. There are plenty of options out there for you to consider, you just have to think back to when you were a kid and see if you can come up with a few things that bring a smile to your face. If you make babysitting enjoyable, your child will enjoy it too. Of course, you will probably find it to be a good experience and the child will tell their parents to invite you back over next time too.

How to Go Out With the Child?

Parents love nothing more than being able to go out in public with their child, showing him or her off to family, friends, and even strangers.  However, a sense of fear goes along with this, knowing the child could cry because of not getting his way, do something embarrassing, get sick and make a huge mess, or throw a full temper tantrum.  For that reason, we often hear the question pertaining to how to go out with the child, specifically when it comes to restaurants.

Although it might seem like a nice idea to leave the child home with the other parent or grandparent, the truth is that children need to be socialized from an early age.  The sooner and more often you can get your child into various public situations, the quicker he or she is going to learn the right way to behave.  Therefore, it is important to learn how to go out with the child so you can enjoy your time, along with that of the child’s.

• Whenever possible, call ahead to the restaurant, friend’s house, or other location to make sure it is okay to bring the child.  For instance, if your friend were having several people over for dinner and you have been told that bringing your child is fine, you could reassure the friend that if at any point the child acts up, you will leave.  However, it is also important that for children old enough to understand, they too need to be told that any bad behavior will result in leaving.

• Preparing your child is one of the answers on how to go out with the child.  As mentioned in the first scenario, sit down and talk to your child, setting some hard rules.  Let us say you were going to the grocery store and your child wants to go.  Explain to him or her that the purpose of the trip is to buy groceries but that if he/she behaves throughout the entire shopping process, you would allow a small treat.

• For younger children, it is always a good idea to take along small toys, games, or healthy snacks to keep him or her interested/distracted.

• In some cases, you might be out during a time your child is tired.  If you know you are going over to a friend’s house, simply ask if it would be okay for your child to use a bed when he/she becomes sleepy.

• Okay, how to go out with the child to a restaurant is a big on.  For some reason, if kids are going to misbehave, it is usually while dining out.  Therefore, always choose family style restaurants, the ones that cater to small children.  With this, other families will not be distraught if your child cries, becomes loud, or acts up.  You should also consider restaurants with kid-friendly menus, the ones that have a nice selection of healthy foods, but also foods you know your child will actually eat.

• Whenever arriving at your destination, find out where you could change or feed your baby, if necessary.  Getting this out of the way will help put you at ease.

• If you find that your child misbehaves, take him outside or to the bathroom to reprimand him, never in public.  The reason is that by showing some respect to your child, you are teaching him or her to act with respect in return.  Additionally, disciplining your child in private would allow a small smack on the bottom if needed.  Then, many children will be more embarrassed by having to be taken away for a talking to then if you had tried to handle the situation at the table or wherever it occurred.

Just remember that when it comes to how to go out with the child, the above-mentioned tips do not always work.  While they are usually successful, all parents will be faced with times and/or situations where the child simply refuses to cooperate.  If you have made every effort, go home.  An example would be dining at a restaurant with your spouse and child.  Shortly after the food is delivered, the child starts in.  Regardless what you try, he/she is not letting up.  Instead of ruining dinner for everyone else in the restaurant and feeling miserable yourself, ask the server to box up the food, pay, and leave.

Keep reminding yourself that children have to learn and for some, the lessons are long and hard.  By constantly working on manners, providing gentle reminders to your son or daughter about the appropriate way to behave, the child will eventually get it and respond.  You should not feel bad or alone in this problem; it is merely a part of parenting.

Maintaining a Proper Diet for your Child

A growing problem in today’s society is lack of proper diet for our children.  Without doubt, we live such busy lives today that finding time to sit down to a healthy meal can be challenging, but not impossible.  Changing your child’s diet will benefit him or her as a child but also into adult years.  Learning to eat the right foods, but also the right amount will reduce risk of obesity, which leads to serious health problems such as diabetes, heart conditions, and even some cancers.

Sadly, child obesity is around 20% today, a huge increase from 5% in 1964.  In addition to eating too much food and the wrong types of food, we see children spending far too much time in front of the computer or television.  Twenty years ago, children were outside much more, riding bikes, playing basketball, spending time at the playground, building forts, and other sedentary activities.  Sadly, inactivity is a serious and growing concern for children today.

In addition to getting your child involved with some type of physical activity or sport, you can also change your child’s diet.  Simply incorporating healthier food choices and cutting back on the quantity are great starts to giving your child a much healthier and happier life.  The key to this success is increased parental involvement.  Sure, this is difficult in times.  Between busy jobs, going to school, and running children back and forth to various functions and parties, finding time to sit down to a good meal takes planning and determination.  However, getting your child on the right track to health is something that every family can accomplish.

As stated, good planning is one of the most important elements when it comes to your child’s diet.  For instance, it is far easier and more convenient to purchase fast foods, which are loaded with fats and carbohydrates.  Additionally, these types of meals are typically huge, meaning your child is eating more than the body needs.  As a result, the extra food consumed is stored in the body as fat and if not burned off with some type of physical activity, increased weight becomes a serious issue.

You can start by teaching your child the right way to eat.  This involves sitting down to a light but healthy breakfast, providing fruits and vegetables to lunchtime meals, and preparing family dinners consisting of the main food groups.  Getting involved with your child’s diet will help control the amount of food consumed.  In addition, you can show your child how foods high in fiber, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes will make him or her feel full but without unwanted calories.  Good food choices will fill the stomach and increase levels of energy and concentration while unhealthy food choices make a person feel hungry within an hour after eating, also producing a sense of fatigue.

With meals supersized, knowing the right amount of food to feed your child is hard to determine.  Of course, you would need to take a number of factors into consideration such as the child during growing spurts.  However, a great rule of thumb is that up to the age of five, your child only needs approximately one tablespoon of each food per year.  In other words, if you were serving a meal consisting of meat, potatoes, vegetables, and bread, and your child were four years of age, you should only expect him or her to eat four tablespoons of meat, four of potatoes, four of vegetables, and four bites of bread.  While this rule will vary somewhat, a child going way beyond this guideline is likely eating too much.

Take breakfast as a great example.  For a child between the ages of one and three, the following would be considered normal and healthy.

• 1/2 cup of milk
• 1/4 cup of fresh fruit or fruit juice
• 1/4 cup of cereal
• 1/4 slice of bread

However, for a child between the ages of four and six, the quantity would change to the following:
• 3/4 cup of milk
• 1/2 cup of fresh fruit or fruit juice
• 1/3 cup of cereal
• 1/2 slice of bread

Keep in mind that if you find your child is constantly hungry or does not get full on what is considered a healthy amount of food, you should talk to your doctor.  Sometimes, certain health issues can cause problems that would make your child hungrier than usual.  However, once any type of health issue has been ruled out, you will need to start slowly cutting back on the amount of food, teaching your child to eat the right amount and right type of foods.

Of course, if your child has been eating too much food or all the wrong types of food, you cannot expect to one day, change everything, which would be disastrous.  You would end up with a very, upset child, one refusing to eat the good foods placed on the table.  Making change to your child’s diet is a process.  Typically, you could begin the change and within one month, have the food types and quantity adjusted where they should be.

Newborn Baby Checklist

New Born Baby ChecklistWhen it comes to having all that you need for your baby when he arrives, you will want to use this checklist to help you. It can be quite overwhelming to know what newborn babies need before they arrive. This will help you to prepare.

Clothing And Diapering

There are several things you will need in this category:

Stock your babies drawers with onesies. These are the tee-shirt style undershirts that will button between their legs. These provide for the easiest of products to use. Have at least 8 to 10 available in newborn sizes
Sleepers and nightgowns should be purchased. Have a few nightgowns for the first few days, then go to sleepers for added warmth. In sleepers you should have at least enough for one week.
For trips out of doors, make sure your child has a warm, full body coat, a jacket, mittens if not included, and hats.
Clothing to fit the season. The rule of thumb is to add one additional layer to your child than what you are wearing.
In diapering, have at least two dozen diapers on hand always. Twice as many is best. Make sure to have baby wipes, a diaper pail, diaper crate and wash cloths.

Feeding

If you plan to breast feed, have a breast pump picked out with the right products to use with it. You should also have breast pads, nursing bras, nursing pillows available.
For formula feeding, you need to wait until your baby is born before purchasing the right formula as some children will not take to one type or another. Your doctor will help you in this decision. You will also need bottles, at least six to eight, bottle brushes, sterilizers, and burping cloths.

Furniture

When it comes to furniture for your baby, always purchase new, non used products and insure that they are assembled properly.

Crib with the right sized slots on the side. A mattress that is firm with sheets and several blankets.
Infant washing basin. Make sure they have non slip interiors. Add to this baby shampoo, wash cloths and nail clippers.
A changing table is also useful, although not necessary.
A rocking chair will make for the perfect place for baby to fall asleep.
A baby swing is another useful tool those first few months.
A car seat is required by law in most areas. You will not be able to leave the hospital with baby without one. Make sure it is installed properly as well.
Diaper bag is essential. You will want it to be large enough to carry a dozen diapers, feeding products and a few toys.
Strollers are also important especially when you will be taking baby out. Those that come with the car seats are ideal.
Highchairs are necessary within the first few months.
A baby thermometer is necessary as well.

These are just the basics of what you will need. Take a stroll down the baby aisle and make sure your newborn babies have what they need.

Proper Diet for a Healthy Child

Children in today’s society are not getting high enough levels of nutrition, especially fiber.  Unfortunately, because of busy lifestyles, children are often fed diets loaded with carbohydrates and fats.  While some carbohydrates and fats are needed in a diet, fiber is even more important.  In addition to adding more vitamins and minerals to the diet, plants such as fruits and vegetables have a number of other benefits.

• Fiber makes a person feel fuller, which means the body consumes more vitamins and minerals but without extra calories.
• Plants in the diet also help by reducing high cholesterol
• Fiber is excellent for protecting children against diabetes

The bottom line is that the more plants you can incorporate into your child’s diet the healthier he or she will be.  Now, we all know that many children baulk at the thought of eating fruits and vegetables but using the right recipes, you can make these foods taste good.  In fact, there are ways of adding plants to normal recipes without the child even knowing.  Two great examples are meatloaf and chili.  In both cases, you could easily add pieces of broccoli, carrots, and even Brussels sprouts.  Keeping the pieces small so they mix in, your child will have no idea that the delicious meal is also nutritious.

Plant foods are from not only fruits and vegetables, but also whole grains and legumes.  Health experts recommend that children eat a minimum of five servings of these daily.  Again, making the food look more appetizing and fun, as well as incorporating plants into other dishes is an excellent way to meet this quota.  If you have a child that refuses to eat plants such as broccoli or carrots, you could choose pears, baked potatoes with the skin on, or dried fruits instead.

The goal with adding plants to your child’s diet is to find the ones your child likes and stick with them.  Of course, you can always encourage your child to try new fruits and vegetables but starting with those you know will be eaten is the best action to take.  For instance, you might start with fruit and then introduce your child to small pieces of broccoli with melted cheese or baked potato skins with butter and bacon.

Other keys to getting your child to eat more plants is by sticking with things that have a crunchy texture and not peeling fruits and vegetables.  First, children typically prefer a crunchy texture to a soft texture.  Additionally, the peel of fruits and vegetables is where all the vitamins are found.  Therefore, cooking these plant foods with the skin on will provide more vitamins and minerals but also improve the taste.

You could also encourage your child to eat more plant foods by creating a delicious dip.  For instance, children often love crunchy celery, carrot sticks, and even cauliflower as long as there is a delicious, creamy dip to go with it.  It would be easy to choose a low-fat dip, again giving your child the flavor he or she wants but without the added calories or fat.  Something this simple can be very successful.

Children also love being involved with things.  If you have a child who simply refuses even to try fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or legumes, ask him/her to help you make dinner.  Many times, just being involved in the preparation and cooking process is enough to peak the child’s interest.  With this, your child will feel as if he/she played an important role in making the food, thereby being more willing to eat it.

You might also consider growing a garden, again making this a family project where you could teach your child about gardening while producing healthy plant foods.  By being involved, you will likely find your child more willing to try new foods, and actually learn to enjoy them.  Remember, it is never too late to introduce plant foods into a child’s diet but the most important thing is to start while the child is very young, introducing all types of healthy foods.  With this, your child will grow up not knowing any different!

Most importantly, be patient.  If your child has never eaten healthy plant foods before, it will take time and patience.  Do not force your child to eat fruits and vegetables in that he or she will refuse.  Instead, start by adding these plant foods to regular food dishes, while offering crunchy foods with the meal.  In most cases, the child will eventually taste the plant foods, choosing what he or she likes best.  Keep in mind, peanut butter added to celery, creamy dips provided with carrots, and cheese with broccoli are great ways to enhance the flavor of the fresh foods.

Proper Language Development of a Child

Obviously, language is a part of a child’s life that is very important.  This does not just mean talking, but speaking correctly.  Unfortunately, many children, especially during the major growing years, are faced with challenges to include lisping, stuttering, or just slow development.  In this article, we will address proper language development of a child, outlining what it is, as well as ways in which you can help your child.

From the time a baby is born, parents eagerly await those first words, commonly “dada” or “mama”.  Typically, a child will say his or her first word or words around nine months of age, some younger, some older.  However, if you are a parent and you notice that by two years of age your child is not saying simply phrases or even full sentences, there might be a problem with the language development.

Do not assume when we say, “proper language development of a child” that we are suggesting the process is automatic.  Every child will need to be worked with, repeating words, making object association, and so on.  Each child must have language reinforced through a number of methods.  For instance, if a child were never to hear a spoken word, he/she would simply never have the ability to communication.  Instead, this learned behavior is something in which parents are greatly involved.

However, a newborn baby will begin learning language from the moment of birth.  Then as the child begins to grow, proper language development of that child is ensured by the parents in a number of ways.  As an example, for a child to grow from a language perspective, he/she will also need to have a healthy body and mind, which comes from proper diet, the right amount of good sleep, and so on.  Therefore, as parents, we want to make sure we provide our children with everything needed to grow up healthy.

From birth, you should begin to talk to your child, even if it is silly talk.  Interestingly, several studies have been performed, showing that mothers who do not talk continually to their baby during the feeding, dressing, or bathing process, will typically have a child that talks late.  On the other hand, a parent who is constantly talking while interacting with a child will see much earlier language development for a child.  The more you talk the more a child will listen and begin repeating sounds that eventually become words.

An excellent way to encourage language development of a child is with reading.  The key is to read to your child as often as you can, but choosing different stories and using variations of emotion.  Sadly, reading a bedtime story to a child is something we see less and less of.  With busy schedules, some parents simply do not make an opportunity for this important bonding and learning time.

The good news is that today, you can find exceptional books on the market, opposed to what was available 20 years ago.  Books now include pop-ups, animations, noise, and much more, which excel language.  Then, in addition to reading to help with language development of a child, you could sing.  Whether singing a lullaby at night or sitting down to enjoy a child’s music video together, music can be a powerful solution for language development.

Finally, we also suggest nursery rhymes for language development for a child.  Most children love rhymes, which are usually easy to mimic, encouraging the development of sound.  In fact, recent research shows that among three-year-old children, incorporating the reading of rhymes into daily life was a huge predictor for how well the child would ultimately do in school.  Children in this study group were tested for IQ, which was found to be higher than children not exposed to rhymes were.

The language development language of a child will have much to do with the way in which the child is raised and exposed to various resources.  However, some children will still be faced with challenges such as lisping or stuttering.  In situations such as these, it is important to find a good, speech therapist, someone that will have the education and expertise to work with your child.  With proper intervention, a child that lisps or stutters will see incredible and positive results.

Many times, parents concerned over a child’s language development will find that it seems as if overnight, the child was talking fine and where he or she should be.  In other words, while you can be concerned, do not panic.  Children are funny people, often surprising parents in unique ways, even language.

Remember that Parents are Human

Children often expect parents to be strong or invincible but the truth is that parents are human too.  Even the most loving and patient parents are going to make mistakes while raising a child.  Remember, no one book tells a parent how to be ideal, considering there are so many different factors involved.  If you are a parent, you do have access to some helpful resources but you also need to understand that mistakes are going to happen.

It is important to understand that your behavior and attitude in life will have a direct impact on your child.  The more stable environment you can provide, a life filled with love, support, and proper discipline the better your child will develop normally.  The key with any parent/child relationship has to do with communication.  The two of you have to talk about things, to include school, relationships, challenges, goals, and dreams.  Keeping the communication line open will help to socialize your child while giving him or her much better opportunity of succeeding in life.

To ensure you make fewer mistakes while raising your son or daughter, you need to know the most common things with which parents struggle.  Regardless whether your child is young or already out of the house and on his/her own, good parenting makes a huge difference.

Rebellion

All children will go through periods of rebellion.  These times are tough, often forcing the parent to deal with defiance, stubbornness, and even sassy talking back.  For starters, realize that this phase of your child’s life will happen but to what degree no one knows until he/she is in the situation.  Some children will have little rebellion while others go over the top.  Although normal, parents can make the time of rebellion worse by over-supervising or over-parenting.

Typically, the years of rebellion will occur during the teenage years, a time when your child is trying to gain independence and figure things out.  By being too strict or forcing too much parental advice on him/her, you will likely see the rebellion become worse.  While you still need to set boundaries and provide guidance, keep the amount to a manageable level.  In other words, you need to provide your child with the opportunity to spread his/her wings.  Otherwise, your child will never learn how to grow into a healthy-minded adult.

Stealing

While no parent wants to think that their child steals, most will try it at least once.  If you find that your child has stolen something small, you could certainly give them one free ride to include a good talking to but if the problem happens more than one time, they need to learn responsibility.  For instance, if your child stole a pack of gum and you found out once you arrived back home, take the gum away and then explain to your child why stealing is wrong.

However, the next time a pack of gum or anything else were stolen, drive your child back to the store from where the item was taken, requiring him/her to go inside, hand the item back over to the clerk along with the money, and fess up along with an apology.  It is critical that your child learn right from wrong and sometimes, you will need to make the child accountable.  Yes, this is hard to do but imperative for helping your child learn a very important lesson.

Rules

All children, regardless of age, need rules.  By establishing boundaries, you are actually accomplishing two things.  First, you are teaching your child what is and is not appropriate, a lesson that can be carried throughout life.  Second, you actually create a sense of security for the child.  Most kids want rules and discipline.  By having boundaries, the child feels as if you care more while allowing him/her to use you as a scapegoat.

In a prime example, if you have a child that is being persuaded by a group of kids at school to go somewhere that he/she knows is unwise, the child can use the rules as a way of getting out of the situation, telling the kids that’s his/her parent will not allow them to go.  Rules are an essential part of any child’s life, helping him/her immediately but also preparing that child for going off to college or entering the workplace.

Finances

Finally, you need to teach your child the proper way to budget, spend, and save.  Too often in today’s society, parents hand money over as if it were no big deal.  Unfortunately, buying your child everything he or she wants is not giving a good example of finance management.  Instead, provide your child with a means of making the money.  You could offer odd jobs around the house or yard and then paying the child for services rendered.  In addition to feeling a sense of accomplishment, your child will gain an entirely different outlook on money.

These and many other mistakes show that parents are human.  We make mistakes throughout the child-rearing years but we can correct them too.  One of the most important lessons you can provide to your child is letting him/her see that parents are human.  If you cry in front of your child, do not feel bad and if you need to correct a mistake, do not worry.  While you want to avoid mistakes as much as possible, when you make one, you are enforcing the theory that parents are human and we too are learning right along with the child.

The Many Gender Differences

Although most kids love doing many of the same things, you will find definite, gender differences.  Sometimes, these differences encompass physical activity preference while other times, the differences are seen in personality, characteristics, and behavior.  If you are the parent of a boy and girl, you will attest to this fact.  For this reason, raising children of different gender can be exciting and fun, but also challenging.

Studies have been conducted in-depth, finding that when it comes to learning, boys and girls are not only different by nature, but they have distinctive differences in the way they learn.  By using new technology for braining scanning, medical experts have been able to determine that gender differences include responding to stimuli, rest, and activity in unique ways.

Other studies have been done on gender differences to determine how these differences manifest.  For instance, at the age of four days, it has been shown that girls will hold eye contact with the parent much longer than boys will.  However, these same studies also show that boys respond more to movement or activity than you would see with girls.  Even studies pertaining to vocabulary show gender differences with a girl using 20,000 words whereas a boy will use just 7,000 to 10,000, perhaps the reason women are more talkative in general.

This does not mean that girls are smarter than boys are, just that they have the ability to learn verbal skills at a younger age and that boys tend to be more active.  Of course, gender differences go well beyond eye contact, vocabulary, and physical activity.  The brain differences found also crossed over into motor abilities, meaning that boys are generally more active and can grasp tasks such as walking easier than that of girls.

As one professional said, “Nature and nurture always work together”, which is so true.  For example, girls are often raised in the home with a different type of nurturing from the parents, more protectiveness.  That coupled with them being nurturing by nature, means that as adults, the female takes on the position of caregiver in most instances.  She is more empathetic and because of her advanced vocabulary, finds it easier to express herself.  On the other hand, boys are usually raised to be in a position of leader.  As they grow into men, you typically see a more aggressive, competitive, and protective adult who is not good at expressing feelings verbally.

Tips for Bathing a Baby

A clean baby is a happy baby.  Typically, even newborns enjoy the soothing feel of warm water, but only if they feel safe, actually liking the bathing process.  Sometimes, parents will place the baby or small child in the tub with them or when being rushed, will opt for a “spit bath”.  For small babies, the best option is to purchase a small tub designed specifically for a baby.  Then for toddlers, you can use the regular bathtub, but we recommend you choose a tub seat, which will protect them from falling in the water.  For older children, a standard bathtub will do the trick.

When bathing your baby or small child, you want to start the bath process by getting everything needed laid out before you start the bath.  This would include soap, shampoo, conditioner, towel, washcloth, clean clothes, hairbrush, and lotion/powder.  By having everything organized before you run the water, you will be able to provide your child with your 100% condition.  After all, you never want to walk out of the room when your child is in the bathtub, not even for one second.

Unfortunately, many children have drowned because the parent stepped out.  For instance, cases where the parent went to answer the phone, staying on just five minutes only to come back to find the child had drowned, are common.  Did you know that a small child could drown in just one inch of water?  It is true, which is why your undivided attention is crucial to your child’s safety.

From there, run the water for bathing, filling the tub only about six inches and keeping the temperature of the water warm, but not hot.  Remember, babies and small children have delicate skin so what feels warm to an adult may actually feel a little warmer to the child.  As far as when to bathe your child, typically every day but missing a day will certainly not cause any harm.  Most importantly, remember to wash all of the creases, especially behind the ears, a part of the body often missed where bacteria can grow.

With your baby or toddler in the water, use the washcloth and mild soap, starting with the head and face.  Then, move to the back, shoulders, legs, or tummy.  Always leave the child’s personal area to last, ensuring that bacteria is not transferred from the bottom to the face.  In fact, many parents will use one washcloth for all the body parts excluding the bottom and then a second washcloth for the private areas.

Once the bathing of your child is complete, you will need to rinse him or her down to get all the soap off.  As far as the child’s hair, you can just use the soap and water during bath time.  Then once or twice a week, actually use baby shampoo.  Typically, a baby or young child will not need his or her hair washed every day unless it is really, dirty or covered with food, which is a possibility.

During the bathing process, if your child is old enough to sit still, you might consider taking one of his or her favorite books in the room with you, making this a special time of bonding.  Otherwise, for older kids, purchase various types of bath toys, which will encourage him/her to stay in the water so the body can get clean.  When all the cleaning is done, make sure you dry your child off exceptionally well, and dress.

Now, when bathing a baby that has cradle’s cap, with the hair wet, you can use the comb to get rid of the dry skin.  Usually, the wet hair and scalp will make this process much easier.  Additionally, bathing a small baby would likely involve cleaning the eyes.  For this, you could use small, cotton balls, dipping them in plain water and then gentle wiping around the eyes to get rid of any dried mucous.

Of course, after bathing your child, you may want to apply both powder and lotion.  In addition to moisturizing your baby’s skin, this also makes him or her smell sweet.  As mentioned, the most important factor associated with bathing is to remain in the room at all times, and be nearby to steady your child if he/she starts to tip over.

The two most important things to remember when bathing a baby is one never leave the baby alone, not even for one second, and two, make this quality time of bonding.  Soon, your baby will love spending time with mom or dad, splashing, giggling, and having a great time.

Tips for Buying Nursery Equipment

When setting up your baby’s nursery, you are going to need a number of things to include furniture, equipment, lighting, rocker, and much more.  Everything you put into the nursery should be deemed safe and create an environment for your baby that is secure and comfortable.  As you will see from the options below, when it comes to nursery equipment, the possibilities are incredible.

Baby Monitors

One of the most important types of nursery equipment you should buy is a baby monitor.  This monitor system is designed with a receiver and transmitter.  For this, the transmitter is placed on a table somewhere within the nursery and the monitor in the bedroom or other rooms of the house. Additionally, many monitors now offer wireless receivers, allowing you to carry it with you wherever you go.

The purpose of baby monitors is to allow parents to hear when the baby awakens of cries.  For instance, if your laundry were downstairs, out of range from hearing a crying baby, you could take a portable baby monitor with you.  That way, while doing laundry, you would have the ability to hear your baby cry so you could go to the nursery to check on him or her.

Humidifiers

In some parts of the country, the air is extremely dry, lacking humidity.  In this case, you might consider adding a humidifier to your baby’s room.  When choosing this type of nursery equipment, we suggest you choose a top brand and design specifically made for babies.  With the humidifier running, the air in the room will become more comfortable, allowing the baby to sleep better.

Window Guards

If your baby’s nursery is on the second floor of a home or even higher in an apartment complex, it is essential that you place a window guard over the window.  With this nursery equipment, once your child is old enough to start moving around, you never have to worry about him or her accidentally falling out the window.  Additionally, window guards allow you to open the window during the spring and summer months for fresh air, but again without the worry of disaster.

Door Locks

These locks are also an important type of nursery equipment, being locks that are inexpensive and can save your child from harm.  Designed to use on drawers so a child cannot open them, you eliminate the risk of your child pulling the dresser down on him/her or climbing, which would also be dangerous.

Nightlight

Every nursery needs a nightlight, which provides soft lighting for the baby but also enough light so the parent can see during the night without having to turn on the brighter, room light.  For nursing mothers, a good nightlight will make it easier and safer to walk into the room at 3:00 in the morning.

Outlet Covers

Although outlet covers are a simple type of nursery equipment, they will also keep your child from being shocked.  Again, when your child starts moving around, he or she will head straight for the electrical outlets and stick the first thing he/she can get hold of inside.  As you can expect, the child would be shocked.  To avoid this, purchase special outlet that block the outlet off so the child cannot investigate.

Shelving

Even for small babies, a nursery with shelves is very handy.  While little, the shelves can be used for holding things around the changing table, lights, or cute figurines.  Then as the child grows, the shelving could be changed to hold books, CDs, stuffed animals, and similar items.

Rocking Chair

If you have room in the nursery, you will not go wrong adding a rocking chair.  This will provide you a comfortable place to sit and rock your sweet baby during the night.  Just make sure the rocker is padded, quiet, and comfortable.

In addition to the nursery equipment mentioned, remember that you will need to buy other items to include a crib, mattress, changing table, rocking chair, lights, rugs, wardrobe, and decorative items to go along with the scheme chosen.  The most important thing, regardless of the type of nursery equipment, has to do with safety.  Always purchase from a reputable manufacturer, follow the installation or set up procedures carefully, and pay attention to any recalls.

One great example has to do with dressers.  A number of children die each year because the dresser is pulled down onto the child, crushing him or her.  Therefore, always use anchoring screws, securing the back of the dresser to studs in the wall.  This process takes a few minutes but could virtually, save the life of your child.

Tips for the Father as Parent

Today, the number of single fathers has increased dramatically.  For one thing, the court system is now recognizing that fathers make just as good of parents as mothers do so and in some cases, better.  Then, you have some children that prefer to live with the father for one reason or another.  Another group of kids involves those without a mother due to death or simply that they are not wanted by the mother.  Of course, single fathers are also the result of the increasing divorce rate in our country.  Regardless of the reason, the father as parent is a wonderful situation but one with many challenges.

Most fathers are exceptional parents, loving and supportive but many will have little idea of what it takes to be a single father.  Being the father as parent brings about a completely new set of issues that need to be understood and addressed.  We want to encourage you to believe in yourself and your abilities as a single parent.  With the right tools and resources, you will succeed.

The following are just a few of the many areas in which being father as parent will need to be addressed at one time or another.

Communication

One of the best things you as a single father can do is learn good communication skills.  This means not just talking but also listening.  By learning to listen to your child, you will have the opportunity to open up all kinds of channels, learning about his/her fears, goals, aspirations, challenges, and so on.  The more you can talk with and listen to your child, the less difficult obstacles in child rearing will be.

You need understand who your child’s friends are, where your child is going, what concerns he or she has living in a single parent situation, what is going on at school, etc.  By keeping the lines of communication open, you are setting the stage so when your child becomes an adult, he/she can come to you about anything openly, and freely.  Additionally, good communication is teaching your child how to be a good, communicator as an adult, something he or she can carry on into his/her own family.

School Involvement

Typically, a father as a parent, one going it alone, works a full-time job.  This means finding time to be involved with school functions, activities, and problems can be challenging.  However, it is crucial that you stay involved with the school, as much as you can.  Even if you cannot make every meeting, play, or concert, you need to do everything in your power to go as often as possible, showing support to your child.

Additionally, make sure you stay informed about the goings on at your child’s school.  This means making the effort to talk to the child’s teacher or counselor to ensure there are no problems looming on the horizon.  Often, staying informed will be the key to heading off trouble before it begins.

Space

One of the hardest things for a parent to do is give their child space, even while young.  Children need to learn the importance of independence, which will ultimately help them for the future.  Every child needs privacy and space, time just hang out with friends, talk on the phone, or simply tuck away in the bedroom to read a book.

Just as being involved with your child regarding activities is important, space is also vital.  As your child reaches around age 10, give him or her time after walking in the door from school to unwind. In other words, do not start bombarding your child with 100 questions about their day.  Instead, let the child come in, get a snack, put his/her things away, and relax.

Fairness

Often, fathers tend to be protective over the children, which is fine but as a single parent, you may find yourself being a little to protective.  As your children begin to grow, reaching teenage years, you are going to have to trust the things you taught him or her will sink in and work.  Therefore, work at being fair.  If you have a daughter who is 16 and wanting to go on a date, she is not a “little girl” but a young teen.  With this, you can set some rules and a curfew and then let her enjoy her evening.

Being the father as parent in a single family home will be met with challenges but these do not have to be overwhelming or bad.  At first, it will take time to learn the ropes.  Be patient, providing your child with lots of love and support and together, you will figure out a system that works best for you.  You will need to provide a perfect balance of discipline and freedom, which takes a little bit of practice.

Understanding the Importance of Breastfeeding

Many parents prefer bottle-feeding their baby over breastfeeding, primarily because of time and schedules.  For instance, if a new mother only has a couple of weeks off from her job, it would be difficult to start with breastfeeding.  There is certainly nothing wrong with bottle-feeding a child but as you will learn in this article, breastfeeding has many excellent benefits.  For lots of parents, the importance of breastfeeding far outweighs any negatives.

The average time a mother breastfeeds a baby is one year, although some women go even longer.  However, a number of mothers who started out breastfeeding will do so for a few months while on maternity leave, switching to formula until the time when the child is ready for solids.  The one thing that cannot be argued when it comes to the importance of breastfeeding is that the milk offers the child much more than any bottled milk could ever achieve.

The thing about breastfeeding is that human milk is simple remarkable.  While some formula options on the market are good, they cannot come close to the value of real milk.  For instance, human milk provides immunological, nutritional, and developmental benefits.  Studies have been done showing that babies who were never given breast milk tend to have more problems with ear infections, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal issues, obesity, diabetes, and even forms of childhood cancers.  Going a step further, some studies have even suggested that breastfed babies are more intelligent than those raised on a bottle.

Today, we live in a world of toxins and chemicals that can lead to illness or disease in babies, especially those with lowered immune systems.  Therefore, the importance of breastfeeding in this case is that babies are not subjected to contaminants, or they have a better ability to fight them off.  By being able to resist toxic effects from the environment, babies are healthier and happier.

Over the past 15 years, the importance of breastfeeding has become quite apparent.  In fact, a declaration was signed in the United States back in 1990 stating that of all contributors to an infant’s life, breastfeeding was the most valuable.  Because of this, major organizations around the country support natural feeding, to include UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and even the Department of Health and Human Services.

Today, a number of health plans are promoting breastfeeding through educational programs and interventions.  What medical research has proven is that while feeding a baby naturally is important throughout the entire time planned, it is specifically critical in the first five days of life.  The reason is that human milk contains immunologic agents and a variety of other compounds that help babies fight off bacteria, parasites, and viruses.  Because a baby will not reach a completely developed immune system until around the age of two, providing him or her with breast milk provides the best way to fight.

It has also been found that breastfed babies tend to gain less weight and learn at a younger age.  Other benefits include convenience.  For mothers, they never have to worry about buying formula, bottles, and nipples, mixing the formula, heating it to the right temperature, and then feeding the baby.  Instead, the milk is perfectly mixed and at the ideal temperature all the time.  With breast milk available, many working mother are able to continue this process by expressing milk throughout the day and then adding it to a bottle.

Of course, the importance of breastfeeding also goes into the benefit of cost reduction.  Formula is expensive, period.  Then when you add in the cost for the bottles and nipples, you are paying good money just to feed your tiny baby.  However, breast milk is 100% free.  As you can see, there are many wonderful benefits for the baby and the mom when it comes to breastfeeding, which is why more and more mothers are making this choice.  While there are situations in which breastfeeding is not an option, if you have any possibility of breastfeeding your baby, you will love the benefits, as well as the special bonding time that can never be replaced.

This very personal decision is one that needs careful consideration since there are so many factors involved.  If you have concerns, you can talk to your doctor.  Then to understand the importance, you can visit your local library or go online to gain even more information.  Most importantly, if you choose not to breastfeed, it is perfectly fine.  Your baby will still grow healthy and strong.  Therefore, never feel guilty for the choice you make.  Although breastfeeding does offer some special things to the baby that formula cannot offer, making the choice to bottle feed is not the end of the world.

Ways to Enjoy your Baby

For many first time parents, having a newborn in the house can be overwhelming.  After all, you now have a little human that relies 100% on you, for food, changing, dressing, bathing, milk, love, everything.  Because of the initial stress that you as a new parent might feel, you might find it difficult to settle down and enjoy your baby.  Sure, you need to feel protective but you also need to relax so you can take it all in.

Newborns do not come with any instructions.  Although you will find a wealth of information on the internet and through books, many of the things you learn as a parent will come naturally or through experience.  However, to ensure you get to enjoy your baby to the fullest, consider these recommendations.

Sleep

When your baby is rested, he or she is going to be in a much better mood.  However, you too will need to get as much sleep as possible.  Therefore, when your baby goes down for a nap, you should also consider napping.  With the two of you refreshed and de-stressed, you will enjoy your baby much more.

The Big Picture

On those days that you feel tired, stressed, or overwhelmed, remind yourself of the big picture.  Your tiny baby will be a walking, talking kid in one year.  Time is precious so you need to enjoy your baby, knowing that he or she is not going to stay little for long.  Therefore, instead of focusing on the negative things, such as fatigue, or questioning your ability to parent, stop and look at the big picture.

Quality Time

Even as a small baby, you can establish quality time.  For instance, with your baby secure in a bath seat, you could read or sing to him or her.  When your baby is awake, consider doing baby exercises.  In fact, many classes are now available whereby the parent and baby go together, working out to specific body movements designed to strengthen the baby.

Playing Games

Although you will be somewhat limited for a few months, your baby will soon discover that he or she loves to play games.  For instance, consider buying your child a baby doll to play with, allowing you to enjoy your baby as you see natural nurturing traits come out.  You could also make various baby faces to a small child, watching him/her giggling with delight.  Babies also love going for little blanket rids.  In this case, place your baby safely on his/her back and then on a flat floor surface, pull the baby around.  Chances are that he/she will laugh, wanting more.

Quiet Time

All parents should make quiet time for their babies.  This might mean letting the baby take a nap next to mom or dad, rocking the baby while humming a song, or putting the baby on the floor next to you and simply admiring this wonderful creation.  Too often, parents get so busy that they forget the importance of quiet time as a means to enjoy the child.  However, you will find that you enjoy your baby more when the two of you are just together, in a peaceful environment.

Educational Time

Even when a child is small, he or she can still be introduced to education.  Today, the market has many excellent tools that are great for teaching children of all ages.  Just repeating letters and numbers to the child, or showing him or her an object and then saying the name is an educational lesson.

Visiting Family

Most new parents are eager to take the baby to visit grandparents.  Once the baby is old enough to travel (ask your doctor since it is different for all babies), plan a trip where you can go back home to spend time with your parents and let everyone enjoy the baby as much as you have.  This is also a great time to take advantage of some extra help.

You will also discover that you enjoy your baby far more when you have answers.  For instance, if you have been storing up several questions, afraid to ask a family member or friend in fear of being laughed at, you can be sure you will not be looked down on.  New parents have tons of questions.  Some of these can be answered by close friends or family, some by the baby’s doctor, and some through online resources.  Regardless of where you find the answer, learning all you can about your baby and what it takes to raise him or her properly, will help you feel more at ease, thereby enjoying him or her better.

Baby Shower Ideas

Baby Shower IdeasPlanning a baby shower is a great thing for a celebration about baby's arrival. It also is a great way for parents to get the things that they need without going broke in the meantime! But, when it comes to baby shower planning, do you know what you should and should not do? Or, do you know what is expected of you at the baby shower? Here are some answers to your questions about these topics.

Who throws the shower? It used to be common for a friend to do it, but today, anyone that would like to can. The trend is for mothers and sisters to do the throwing. It is also common for a bunch of people to do so for example in the workplace. Really, it does not matter who throws the shower. You can even do it yourself if you do so tactfully such as throwing a shower to honor your new baby. More than likely, this will be tricky to do. Instead, talk to a friend about it.

Where do I have it? When it comes to the location of the party, you can do it any place that you would like to. Take into consideration the amount of people you are inviting. Large ones should be thrown in hall or maybe a backyard. If it is just going to be you and some friends, then it can be done in a home, in a restaurant or even at work in the lounge. Find a place that is intimate enough but not overly sophisticated for baby's welcoming.

Who's on the guest list? This can be thought of in many ways. If you are having an at work shower, chances are you really do not want to invite family or friends. Invite those that she knows and cares about. If you are throwing a shower for your friend, make sure to include her family. The best bet on how to do this is to get her sister or mother involved in the planning. Or, you can have more than one shower planned. In this case, the mother may throw a shower for her family, you can throw one for friends and there can even be one at work too. Make sure to include those that know her, not necessarily you.

What do I do there? Most baby showers are spent chatting away about the baby and the mother to be. But, you should provide some sort of food to the level of which the party is. A more formal party should probably have a buffet, but a small gathering is good to go with just a deli tray. Don't forget a cake too. You can find a wide range of baby shower games to play. You may want to include a picture session so mom can remember this day.

Baby shower planning should be fun and exciting. You can find a wide range of wonderful things to do as well as decorations for the day right at your local party store or on the web.

Organic Baby Care Products

Organic Baby FoodChoosing natural baby care products for your child will provide your baby with a product that is safe to use as well as easy on their skin. Natural products are easier on the skin. They are less likely to cause an allergic reaction as well. But, that does not mean that any natural products can be used on your child. There are many types of products that you can purchase for virtually every aspect of your baby's life and needs that can be natural in origin.

Here are some of the areas that you may want to consider purchasing and using organic baby care products for your child.

Clothing and Covering. When you are considering what types of clothing to put on your child, take the time to consider cotton. This goes for clothing products, blankets, baby slings and a wide range of other products as well. The goal is to provide your child with a material with no dyes or elements in it that can cause irritation or even worse is that they can cause allergic reactions in the child as well. Cotton is not only going to help in this way but it is also breathable which will keep the skin dry.

Skin Care Products. Another thing to consider is the skin care products that you put on your child's body. These should always be of the most natural means possible. There should never be any harsh soaps or chemicals in them. Consider looking for those products that feature organic, natural essential oils. A good place to start is with aloe, lavender, jojoba as well as chamomile. These are ideal because they cause the least amount of irritation and provide for a good cleansing for the skin. This will include shampoos (always make sure they are tear free and soap free), body washes, lotions, and any other product to touch baby's skin.

Toys too! Don't forget that your child will come into contact with a wide range of toys. The dyes in them, the stuffing that is filling them and the small pieces that can come off are all dangerous to your child. Look for those that provide for organic products online. You will want to especially avoid toys that have chemicals in them as well as synthetic fumes. If the product is organic, it will tell you so.

Furniture. You probably have not thought about it, but the furniture in your child's room should be safe too. Plenty of children will gnaw on the edge of a crib, filling their mouth the deadly paints and stains. Make sure that the products in your baby's room are made from solid woods that are finished with non toxic, natural finishes.

Natural baby care products will provide your child with everything that he needs but they will also take care in providing your child with the things that are a must in safety too. You do not need to hope that nothing will go wrong because you will know that you have taken ever precaution to make sure that it has not had this opportunity. There are many things that can threaten your child's health. Prevent as many as you can.

Outdoor Activities for Preschool

Outdoor Activities for Preschool KidsWhen it comes to getting outdoors, children can benefit in so many ways. Most kids will like to go outside to play if they are encouraged to do so from the time that they are young, even babies. This is healthy for them in so many ways. They are going to get fresh air, which is healthier for them then the air inside a home. They can get physical activity that they need to have to be in good shape. They can also sharpen their motor skills, something that all children need to do. When they play with other children, kids can actually work on social development from both disagreements to sharing to just talking and interacting with others.

But, what do you do once you get your child outside? There are plenty of opportunities for play here that are more than just running back and forth. Here are some ideas to help you.

Exploring. If you take your child outdoors, even in your backyard, make part of the playing process an exploring adventure. The child can play in the dirt even and find living creatures to observe. Or, you can both point out the different homes where animals live.

Physical Challenge. One of the most important things for children to do outdoors is to be physically challenged. If they have the opportunity to play on a swing set, for example, mastering things like the balance beam and the monkey bars will not only help them physically but it gives them a psychological advantage as well. If you do not have these opportunities at your home, visit a community park.

Cooperative. If you do go to the local park, the child will benefit from playing with other children. Not only does this improve social skills, but it can teach good lessons on cooperating. If there are a bunch of children there, propose a topic and let them play it out. For example, suggest that they play fire station. They each get their roles and they have to work together.

Outdoor adventures. There are many themed games and adventures you can draw up for your child. For example, if it is fall, help them to put the leaves in a pile and hop from one pile to the next. Or, have several kids play safari where they will pretend to be different animals living on the safari.

Playing House. One thing that children love to do is to mimic the things that they see you do. It is great learning to give your child this ability to giving them a play house to play in. Yet, these are costly. Instead, consider building a house by using a tent. Or, even have them decorate a large cardboard box.

As children explore the out of doors they will benefit from many things. Of course, they will also have a lot of fun. If your young preschooler doesn't want to go out and play, it may be because he doesn't realize what he can do out there to play. Outdoor activities for preschoolers can be suggested to them, then to open their world to the wonder that awaits them.

Toddler Activities

Toddler ActivitiesEntertaining a toddler is much more than just flipping on the television set and calling it done. This is the time in their life where they will be able to learn the most in the fastest manner. Now is the time to begin teaching them about the world around them. But, to keep them interested, activities for toddlers need to be interesting, fun to do and they should be safe as well. There are plenty of things that you can do with your child to make them learn without realizing they are doing so.

Here are some ideas for you to do with your child.

Texture And Touching. There are many different feels to things. Some things are soft and others are cold. There are many different things that children can touch to notice the difference. You can even use products such as pudding and shaving cream. In a container large enough for their hands, make up some pudding. Encourage your child to get his fingers into it and to make a picture on a sheet of paper with it. He will feel what the pudding feels like (make sure you talk about this with them) and they can taste it too, safely. For the shaving cream, you can get the feet involved. Ask questions like what does that feel like to have them really understanding what they are experiencing.

Motor Skills. Motor skills are the ways in which your child can move about. Some children are more skilled here and others need more work. For a fun activity, get all of your old phone books together (make sure that you don't care if they get ruined) and line them up in a row. Tell the child to walk across without falling down. You can do other things too, such as climbing tasks, using scissors and even just coloring to enhance these very important skills.

Exploring the world around them. Children of this age love to learn more about the things around them. In fact, a simple walk in the park will likely bring up about a hundred questions! Yet, this is the ideal time for them to begin realizing that they are not the only important things in the world. Have the child notice an ant colony and talk about it. Or, have them find a birds nest and find out what's going on inside. You should always be with the child, but talk to them and make sure that they understand what is happening.

Making learning fun is the best way to keep a child interested once you get their interest. Realize, though, that their attention span is quite short. You should realize that they will need some time to explore and get into things, but that they may wander to something new to do as well. Little bits of time and information is all they need right now. Activities for toddlers that is engaging and interesting are activities that they will want to come back to doing time and time again.

Natural Baby Skin Care

Baby Skin CareCaring for your baby's skin should be something you take very seriously. Unlike the skin on your toughened body, a baby's skin is much more fragile, sensitive and likely to need specialized treatment. There are plenty of products on the market to help you, but one of the best ways to go is to purchase and use natural skin care products. These tend to be the most beneficial to the baby's skin without causing injury or allergic reactions to it.

Here are some helpful tips to help you in finding the ideal products to use on your baby.

The Label. The first thing that you need to do is take a good look at the label of the products that you are buying. This will provide you with the highest level of information. If you do not know what all those crazy words mean, though, you can take the time to look them up, or you can do this. If the product has an Aust L number on it, it has been manufactured under the very strictest of conditions and will provide for the highest level of comfort for those that suffer from problems or sensitive skin. This will be located right on the front label of the product.

If the ingredient list of the product is very high tech, it is full of chemicals that can cause possible reactions. Look for ingredients that you know and realize that they are listed by the highest percentage first.

Aromas. There are plenty of products that have aromas added to them making them again a risk for your child's skin. Look for those that do not have these added to them, especially those that are not naturally found. Consider products with sweet almond or jojoba as their base oils.

You should not use products that have soap in them on your baby. This will cause your baby's skin to become irritated and raw. You should always look for a product that is tear free as these will not sting the eyes. You should look for specific, baby products. That is, you should never use your soap products on your baby's skin, especially in the first few months of the baby's life. You should consider purchasing baby body wash and baby shampoo to use. There are plenty of products on the market that will fill this need specifically.

When your baby is born, it is important to realize that your baby's skin is not like your skin. It is much more sensitive and it is likely to become irritated quickly. You may want to consider just using water on the baby's very sensitive areas unless they are soiled. Pay close attention to any reactions that may be evident. You may notice a reddened area or you may notice a rash develop. Should this happen, you should take the time to call on your pediatrician and of course you should stop using it. Baby skin care with natural products can be the best way to go. Look and pay attention to what you are covering your baby with.

Online Childcare Safety

Online Childcare SafetyOnline child safety is essential to protecting your child. You may think that because they are in your home, playing on the computer in the other room that they are completely safe. The sad news is that they are not. There are thousands of predators waiting for them, lurking in chat rooms, in gaming rooms and in instant messages. If you have a child that gets to go online, you need to have a very frank and open conversation with them. There is nothing that is more important to you than to make sure that your child is protected. Unfortunately, your home may not be the safest place.

Here are some things you need to talk to your online child about.

Talk to your child about online strangers and dangers just as you would those that may approach them outside of their home. You should remain calm and be non frightening to them. You do not want to scare them but to inform them of what is out there. You can use many of the same things that you used to teach them to run from strangers right on the web.

Talk about instant messages. Although many ISP's provide for screening for children only to get a limited amount of messages as well as who they are coming from, you should still know when they are talking to someone. Tell them that if a stranger sends them a message to come and get you. Also, tell them that they should never tell anyone their personal information including their full name, address or phone number. They should not even give out their school's name. Finally, set up their instant message system to only allow them to talk to those that you add to their list.

Chat rooms. Older kids will begin to explore the web and this is not a bad thing. It is full of wonderful information for them. But, you need them to understand that the other people in the chat room with them are not necessarily kids they know. And, sad to say, they need to know that people lie. Just because they say they are another 15 year old doesn't mean they are. Along with the rules of no information provided, your child should know never to agree to meet anyone anywhere. This is the perfect scenario for something bad to happen.

Many of the ISP's will provide parents with parental controls to help monitor and restriction their usage, but don't think that this is enough. Teens are much more in control of the web than you realize and can find ways to work around this. Therefore, it is important to sit them down and talk to them about the dangers out there. You should also assure them that if they do come to you to tell you of a problem or something weird that happened that you will not be angry at them and they will not have their internet privileges taken away. You should always have an open communication to your child. Finally, a good rule of thumb is to keep the computer out of their bedroom and in an area where you will be able to see just what they are doing. Online child safety is crucial.

Special Infant Care

Infant CareInfant care centers are available around the country. These locations allow for children to be watched while their mother and father work. More than half of the population will be putting their child in the hands of one of these locations to handle their care. But, do they know about them? Do they realize that some are not licensed? It is essential that anyone that is looking for someone to watch their baby to know what should be available and what resources are available to them.

When it comes to child care, there are several types to consider.

Facilities. Any facility that is providing care for children, including newborn baby care, must be licensed to be open and its staff must be licensed as well. You should always ask about this as well as ask if the center has had any violations in the recent past. There are limits to how many children they can have, especially babies to the number of staff on hand. This number changes from state to state but should be clearly posted and provided to you.

Family Care. Here, the child is watched in a home. This provides for an informal, more personal experience for the child. But, this type of care is not necessarily licensed. In some areas, after the location has a certain number of children in the home they will need to become licensed but most do not reach this level. For that reason, it is important for you to secure the insurance that this location is a good choice for your child.

Infant care centers will usually accept children after they are six weeks old. But, before you find the lowest costing location to go with, consider the quality of the location. There are several things that you will want to know about the location including this.

Is the location licensed? This will provide for the location to be following the regulations of the state and there will be inspections regularly to make sure of this.

How many adults in the location are educated in infant care? You should also know how many babies they will have in their care at any one time. Obviously, the fewer the better.

What do they do with babies? If they allow them to spend the day in a crib, that is not going to stimulate them. They should provide for a schedule that will be followed.

How to work in feedings? Infants generally do not like to go on a schedule that fits everyone else's needs. How do they accommodate this?

They should have security measures in place to insure that the child can not leave the facility by anyone other than you who you specifically say so.

When it comes to finding the right infant care centers, take the time to look at the options that are available to you and find out which can offer you the highest level of care. Newborn baby care should be the highest priority for you, not the price and not the availability of a spot.

Nanny Agencies

Nanny AgenciesWorking with a nanny agency may be the ideal road to go. There are plenty of them out there, offering their services in most cities and locations. When it comes to hiring someone who will be ultimately responsible for your child, in some or even most of their waking hours, there are plenty of things to look for and to worry about. In effect, this job is much too difficult for any one person to do on their own. If you are like most, though, you realize the real need to find someone that can provide you with the things that you want and need for your child is a must. Using a nanny service can help you tremendously.

There are several organizations that you can consider. What you should do is find out which ones offer services in your area and then compare what they have to offer to you. Here are some things to look for in the agency you plan to work with.

You should know what steps the agency has taken to learn about the nanny. At the very least, they should conduct a thorough background check on the person. They should have not only logged the experience that the person has had, but they should also have talked to the individuals and gotten feedback on the individual.

Some agencies will provide training for the nanny as well. This can help those that do not have a lot of experience to get the information and skills they need to make decisions that will be necessary every day of your child's life.

The nanny services should provide for a wide variety of people. What you find to be important in a nanny is not something that someone else will. If the company is to provide you with a nanny that fits your needs, they will need to do extensive interviews with you as well as with your children. Often, the best thing that you can do here is to allow them to do so, as this can bring the search down to the individuals that are best qualified for you.

Take your time when choosing a nanny and a service to use as well. With so many out there, you are sure to find the ideal person to come into your home and provide your child with the care that they need. The good thing is, though, that you have the opportunity to do research, to learn about the agency and about the individuals, and you can weigh the options that you have heavily.

Using these services can benefit you in so many ways. Because the nannies are prescreened, you are offered much more security and you do not have to worry about weeding through those bad applicants. You can also get referrals from other parents that have used the service and talk to them to learn about their experience and the quality of the nanny that they provided. With so many benefits, it just makes sense for you to find the best nanny agency and use their service for your benefit.

Preschool Curriculum

Preschool CurriculumAn effective preschool curriculum will have activities that are fun and enjoyable but will provide your child with the lessons he needs to know. Preschool lesson plans should incorporate all of these aspects. The good news is that there are plenty of choices when it comes to them. Any parent that wants their child to be fully prepared for school or for home schooling should consider an investment in these programs.

There are various options that are available to be used as well. Here are just a few of them to be considered.

Letter and number recognition in which the child will be readying themselves for reading and mathematics.

Shapes and writing techniques can be taught.

Beginning reading will begin to happen in children as they progress through the curriculum.

Science including a wide range of projects that may make learning a lot of fun for them.

Social skills are also taught through stories and interactions. Choosing the right curriculum is the most important aspect here. At the preschool level, all children are at a different place. Some children have been exposed to parents that read to them on a nightly basis while others have not had any interaction like this. Also, each child will be a different type of learner. Some will work well with a set of crayons and paper or worksheets while others will be better off with hands on activities. Finding the right balance can make learning much more effective here.

When choosing a curriculum for your preschooler, take into account what he enjoys doing too. Some children will love to sit down with a big girl workbook and do a page or two. Others would prefer to watch a video about something. In order for you to know what the best choice for your child is, test out a few things with them. Give them a paper and see if they can sit long enough to get it done. Or, pop in a video that is not a cartoon and see if they can pay attention to it.

When considering a curriculum, realize that your child may not learn at the level that is offered in an age based curriculum. You should have your child tested. If you provide your child with something that is too simplistic, they will not be interested in it and will get bored with it. Or, if the child finds the work too hard, he will become frustrated and will begin to hate it instead. There are very simplistic testing products on the web that you can download and use to help you in gauging your child's abilities.

Taking the time to find the right preschool curriculum for your child is what makes all the difference in how well he will do. Encouraging him in a positive, upbeat tone will also help your child to enjoy learning. Making it a game and rewarding him for a job well done can also help. Finding the ideal preschool lesson plans will make all the difference in yours and his success.

Bedwetting Diapers

Betwetting DiapersBedwetting tools are available to you to help your child with their problem. You can use things like bedwetting diapers as well as bedwetting alarms to help you in this task. Most children that face this problem do not do so because they are lazy or because they are being bad. The fact is that they cannot control it and, in many cases, will be completely embarrassed and ashamed of it long before you are yelling at them for doing it. It is essential to find the right product for you and your child to use. Luckily, this problem is large enough that there are plenty of options out there for those that need them.

Youth Sized Diapers. One alternative that you have when it comes to providing your child with the help that they need is to provide them with youth sized diapers. They are ideal for a child that is having problems at night or during the day. It will help to contain the problem, rather than allowing it to damage bedding and clothing. You can find a wide range of them available. Generally, they are made for children up to 90 pounds in weight. There are several manufacturers that make these. Unfortunately, many children that wear them feel as if they are being treated as a baby. You should make your child understand that it is not a punishment but something that is made to help them.

Reusable Diapers. These are manufactured by a wide range of companies. The best part about these is that they can be washed and used again, which can help to save tremendously on diaper costs. Also, many parents find that they provide the most protection when it comes to overnight bedwetting problems.

Disposable Underwear. This product is another option for the bed wetter or the day time wetter. These look and feel a lot like a standard pair of underwear and therefore are less traumatic to their self esteem. They are manufactured for children up to 125 pounds, which includes teens that have night wetting problems. Because they are disposable, there is little to no clean up.

Alarms. There are many mechanical devices that can help you as well. These will trigger an alarm to wake up the child at the first sign that the child is going to have an accident. These can work for many children but most importantly, they can help the child to help control his own destiny with bedwetting.

It is important to realize just how many children wet the bed each night. On average, it is said that six million children have a bedwetting problem. If your child is under the age of six, this may not be something to worry about. After this point, you should talk to your pediatrician to determine what the cause of the problem is. For some children it is stress related. For others it is a problem with their urinary development that they will outgrow. Once your doctor determines the problem, you can both work on the solution for your child whether that is bedwetting diapers or another option.
