Hiring new staff

Hiring_new_staffJust as with any growing and prosperous business, your personal training business will eventually need staff to help cover all of your responsibilities. From filing to scheduling, bookkeeping to alternate fitness staff, you will need and want help as you continue your career as a personal trainer. And just as with any job situation, you will want to make sure that you are choosing the right person for the image that you will want to maintain.

First of all, you will want to start thinking about the reasons why you need staff in the first place. What kinds of duties so you need done:

Filing
  • Reconciling petty cash
  • Dealing with financial information
  • Handling customer calls
  • Scheduling
  • Managing the website
  • Cleaning up the equipment
  • Additional trainers

You might already know what duties you can not handle anymore and start there when you're thinking about the kind of staff that you will need. Try to find the links that would make your job easier and then find a person that is best qualified to handle those needs.

For example, if you're looking for basic secretarial staff, you will want to make a list of the duties that they will need to do. This will help you come up with a clear advertisement for the Internet or for your local newspaper. You want to be as specific as you can so that only qualified and interested applicants give you a call about the position. You might also want to have them send in their resumes prior to your calling them, so indicate this in the ad as well. If you already know what the hourly salary is going to be, you might want to give a range in the advertisement to see if you're offering a decent amount of money for the position and then offer the lowest rate to start off a new staff member.

Other staff positions like other trainers will also require a more thorough advertisement about the kinds of services that you will want them to provide clients that you already have, or if you want them to bring in new clients with them. You might even want to just allow other personal trainers to train their clients at your location for a fee, though still allowing your company and your location to grow in reputation.

The interview is the most crucial part of any new staff decision. You will want to be friendly and informative, but also selective about the person that you do hire. This person is going to be the face that your customers see or the voice that they hear, so they need to be upbeat and personable in the interview as well. Try to ask about their work experience as well as why they might want to work in a fitness related job. While this isn’t an all-important feature, you might want to select staff that are in shape or at least have a healthy interest in fitness and exercise. Try to create scenarios that they might come across in your workplace and ask how they would handle it.

Here are some other qualifications that you might want them to have:

  • CPR training
  • First aid training
  • Any fitness experience

These skills can also be taught on the job to give your staff a professional appearance to your clientele.

After having a few interviews with potential staff members, you will then need to make a final decision. Try to consider what your clients will see and how they might react to the candidate first before making the staffing decision. You might also want to have a trial period with your new staff member to see how they like the position and you can evaluate how they are fulfilling the roles that you have set out for them.

But when will your business need new staff? That is the question on a lot of personal trainers' minds when their business is starting to grow and they realize that they might need help. One of the best ways to decide whether or not you need extra help is to look at the profits that you are making and whether it's a better investment of your time to do the additional work yourself or if you could pay someone to do them for you. The work will need to be done either way, and sometimes having someone else to take on those responsibilities can be an excellent way to make sure that you can give all of your time and attention to your clients.

Having more staff and fitness staff in your personal training business can be a great investment in your future, but you do need to make sure you are choosing the best people you can.---------------------------------------------If you are a business owner get listed at Best Personal Care Site, part of Localwin Network.
